Freya’s Page

Freya poses sweetly for the camera

My name is Freya and I am now 18 months old. I came to Freshfields a year ago, I was found as a stray and no-one came forward to claim me.

Growing up in a rescue kennels isn’t easy, there is lots of noise and commotion. Don’t get me wrong, the staff are lovely, they adore me and I love them too! But for a young girl like me, the noise is upsetting, so much so that I started chewing on the lead when I went on walks. This is my way of trying to make the humans understand that I wasn’t coping too well! The kennel staff soon realised that I need special care and attention and they do what they can to help me. I have been moved from a kennel into a quieter room, where I can get some peace and quiet and finally I can calm down and get some sleep! I’ve stopped going out with different dog walkers too and instead just two kennel staff take me for walks. To begin with, even with just two people, I must admit I was still very stressed, I couldn’t help it though! I would tug on the lead, or on my dog walkers wellies or shoe laces! I wasn’t being ‘naughty’ though, I just found life difficult and this was my way of telling people.

Maybe I can help you understand what it was like for me? You see, dogs need a lot of attention, I’m a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and everyone knows we need more attention than most, we just love people! And even though the kennel staff try their best to spend time with all of us doggies, there just aren’t enough hours in the day, nothing compares to the time and devotion a mummy and daddy will give you in a loving home. I was only young when I came to FAR, I needed a home then, to teach me life skills, coping techniques and socialisation, but sadly I didn’t get that. But I’m trying really really hard to turn my life around and find myself a new home!

Every day the kennel staff take me for a walk and also a drive in the car. I get to spend a whole hour just one to one and I really enjoy it! I love the car, I get lots of fuss and the car makes me relax and feel sleepy. When I first started walking with the staff I couldn’t cope with new places, new scents or seeing people or dogs whilst I was out. I am very pleased to say that I am improving all the time! I now enjoy my walks so much! I sniff everything, I take everything in about my surroundings and I love dunking my head in puddles! A few months ago I would tug the lead and now I can happily walk for half an hour! The kennel staff tell me how proud they are of me and I’m pretty proud of myself too. I now see dogs and people in the distance and I don’t react, I just carry on with my walk. Pretty impressive hey!

Well that’s me, Im affectionate, lively and willing to please, I know that with the right mum and dad I will continue to improve and learn to become a well balanced young girl. Please don’t overlook me, I would love nothing more than a mum and dad to love me!
